Heavy fog continued to play spoilsport on the New Year’s Day as 10 flights were canceled and another 13 delayed at the Flights Cancelled & Delayed Due to Heavy Fog Chandigarh International Airport on last week.
The airport was operational for only four hours. The travelers were hassled and took to social media to complain about flight disruptions.
CHIAL spokesperson Deepesh Joshi alleged the first flight was able to land at 1.15pm, against the normal arrival time of 7:30 am.
International flights from Sharjah and Dubai arrived and departed late. Air India Express Sharjah flight arrived 21 minutes late and departed late by 46 minutes. Similarly, Indigo Dubai flight arrived late by 2.05 hours and departed late by 40 minutes.
Keeping the traveler inconvenience in mind, airline operators have broadcast send flight status updates to the passengers on their mobile phones. Joshi said airline operators had issued an advisory to passengers to reference their mobile phone numbers conspicuously while booking air tickets, enabling them to give past information about flight delays and cancellations.
A spokesperson said they had also requested travelers to confirm their flight status by calling the operators. The choice was taken after travelers felt troublesomeness due to cancellation and delay of flights on the first day of 2018.
Fog remains an annual winter concern because the airport is not equipped with modern Instrument Landing System (ILS).

The maximum temperature on Thursday remained at 18.2 degrees, four nicks below normal; and the minimum temperature was at 12.6 degree Celsius, which was six above normal. The estimate for Friday shows the maximum temperature as 14.2° and the minimum as 11.3°.

As a result of the fog, trains ran late too. Of the 56 that arrive in Chandigarh, 13 arrived late on Thursday. These included Una-Delhi Janshatabdi Express arrived 25 minutes late, while New Delhi-Kalka Shatabdi Express was 15 minutes late.
